Camping with kids – Comrie Croft

This Easter holidays we spent 3 days camping up at Comrie Croft campsite, near Crieff. It was wet, grey and soggy, but, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and we will be back (hopefully when the sun is shining!)

The site has some steading buildings which can be rented, tent pitches in different meadows and woodland at varying heights up the hill and some Nordic Kata tents.

We were staying with family so we had a few tent pitches up in the high meadow. There are parking facilities to unload your gear and wheelbarrows provided to transport your kit to your pitch, but once you have unloaded, cars have to be parked back down the hill at the main site.

The view from our tent on the high meadow was gorgeous (even in the rain!) and we were lucky to see red Kites circling above our tents every morning and bunnies hopping in the field.

One of our family members hired one of the Nordic Kata’s. These had a wood burning stove, large bed and table and chairs inside. They also had their own eco toilet building outside and a small kitchen area under shelter. The kata was super warm with the stove burning and could sleep upto 6 on the giant sleeping platform!

Up in the high meadow camping field there was a large communal roundhouse with a fire pit which was perfect for us all to gather together for meals and to sit in the evening, since it was so wet, to chat and keep cosy. The kids enjoyed sitting round the fire playing card games and singing along to their uncle’s guitar! There was also a toilet block, however the water up here had a boil water notice so was not to be used for drinking, washing dishes or tooth brushing.

The large toilet block, showers and washing up area was down the hill at the main site. The toilets and showers were really clean and the shower was lovely and hot and powerful but it was a bit of trek down and up the hill. The kitchen area was clean and tidy down there too but also a slight pain having to cart all the dishes down and up again. Some of the lower camping meadows were much closer to the shower/kitchen block but even with the hilly walk I think the view from the high meadow made it worthwhile.

Each of the tent pitches and Kata’s had a fire pit outside which was put to good use by the kids (and adults!) for marshmallow toasting and hot chocolate drinking! Wood and kindling can be bought from the site farm shop.

The campsite itself and surrounding area is really picturesque. There is a lovely little river running through the site and an epic tree swing! There is also a very easy walk from the site out to the Comrie Waterfall which was quite spectacular due to all the rain, silver linings and all!

What sets Comrie Croft apart from other sites is the numerous mountain bike trails within the site. There is a bike rental store on site, bike wash, mini trail skills park and a variety of different coloured bike runs. We didn’t bring the kids bikes this time due to the weather but we would love to come back with them the next time. Some of our party rented bikes and did an hour on the trails which they enjoyed and found challenging.

The farm shop on site sells hot drinks and cakes and a variety of fresh produce. It also sells lovely craft items, eco toys and makes by local artists. There is cafe (which wasn’t open on the days we visited) and a food van in the grounds. The farm shop area has covered seating outside which can be used even when the cafe is closed.

We have stayed at a lot of campsites and Comrie Croft felt quite unique. It was a perfect getaway with the kids as there was plenty of space for them to run free and plenty of nooks and crannies for them to explore… we will be back!
